This bright and charming wedding celebrates all the fun of Southern California (where this couple met) along with touches from where they grew up: the bride in Chicago and the groom in South Africa.  The bride, Elizabeth, shares her favorite moments from the ceremony:

When I close my eyes, I can remember exactly how I felt hearing the crescendo of the music as I walked up the pier holding my Dad’s arm, seeing all our family and friends from near and far with smiles on their faces, and feeling the breeze off the Pacific.  I could never have just one favorite part of that ceremony – Lloyd and I poured all of ourselves into the planning of it; we lovingly designed it to represent the essence of ourselves, our families, our beliefs, and most importantly, our love for each other. I loved experiencing the power of the Laying of Hands, I loved the moments of laughter in between the deep, emotional expressions and vows. I didn’t realize it at the time, but we literally shook the pier when we were nailing our bourbon box shut that held our letters to each other and a bottle of bourbon! A family member told me a few weeks after the wedding that, although the day had been slightly overcast, when Lloyd and I began reading our vows to each other the clouds gave way and rays of sunshine shone down on us in the most overwhelming, perfect way. I was so moved when our pastor explained the significance of my wedding band; the ring belonged to Lloyd’s maternal grandmother from South Africa, who gave it to us after proudly wearing it for over fifty years. I wanted to keep very aware of how I was feeling and stay in the present during our ceremony, so I would take deep breaths and smell the air, look around at our loved ones, catch glimpses of the ocean and birds, and just soak up the magic of the moment overall. Every minute was my favorite.

And Elizabeth’s favorite moments of the reception:

Our reception was a culmination of all our hard work, all our creativity, time, love, dedication, and patience we had been pouring out for the twelve months prior. The music, the food (and bourbon!) and amazing people and stunning environment of the Bluff at Paradise Cove turned out to be exactly as wonderful as we had envisioned it would be. The part I’d most like to share here is the moment I stole for myself in the middle of it all to take a look around and soak it all in. I gazed at the dance floor full of people enjoying themselves, felt the warmth of the bonfire and quilts, took in a deep breath of ocean air, and it was all just…perfect. It was the most perfect moment of my life. So far. And anything else you can think of: My husband was born and raised in South Africa, while I was raised just outside of Chicago, and we met here in Southern California. We wanted our wedding to be a representation of our roots as well as our love of California, so we added many personal touches throughout the rehearsal dinner, ceremony, and reception. We held our rehearsal dinner at the Malibu Inn, and Lloyd (my husband) met with their awesome chef to arrange a traditional South African meal for our wedding party and guests. The chef made homemade Boerawors sausage, mashed potatoes and tomato onion gravy – a typical South African party meal. Since both my husband and I had began our individual journeys to California from elsewhere around the nation and globe, we envisioned our wedding to be a sort of rustic 1940’s “road trip” culminating at the Ocean.  We found pieces of vintage luggage to hold our wedding cards and quilts we had collected quilts for our guests to use to lounge on the ground or wrap up in in case it was a cold evening. We wanted to combine elements of California, the Midwest, and South Africa in any way possible. We spent fun evenings together during the summer, which is peak strawberry season here in California, making and jarring strawberry jam to use as both wedding favors and place cards during the reception. My amazing floral designer, Heather Williams of Twig & Twine, included Proteas in my bouquet and in arrangements around the reception, which is the national flower of South Africa. We asked our pastry and dessert chef Heather Wong of the Scootabaker to make mini milk tart pies, which is one of my husband’s favorite desserts he ate growing up in his homeland.
