This post is brimming with cutie details inspired by Kate Spade and a hair tutorial for a lovely braided updo.  Here’s a little info from the photographer about their design process.

Kate Spade is known for being fun, colorful, and stylish, but we wanted to pull away from her more typical structured, modern style and add that whimsical feel with a free flowing bouquet, loose-messy hair, silk ribbons in the wind, etc. Additional inspiration came heritage, vintage furniture and historical houses–we were so lucky to be able to shoot at the North Star House designed by Julia Morgan.  In the spirit of shopping local, all the flowers were grown and styled by Little Boy Flowers. Of course being a girly girl, our bride had to show off three of her favorite pairs of heels throughout the day.  When it’s your wedding, you can do what you want!

Braided Updo Hair Tutorial

It’s the age old question: hair up or hair down? Well, why not both?! This style has the comfort and relaxed edge of wearing your hair down while still maintaining the elegance of an updo. And the best part–It only looks more lovely while it loosens as you dance the night away.

You’ll need hairspray, bobby pins, and a teasing comb or brush.View More: http://lydia.pass.us/katespadewhimsical

1. Using a 1″ curling iron, curl hair.

2. Leaving the sides alone, tease just the center of the crown from the front to about 1/3 of the way back down the center of the head. Two to three layers of teasing ought to do it!

3. Gathering the center section of the crown that you just teased, smooth the top over and twist. Secure with a bobby pin (or two!). You can hide the pin within the twist.
4. Now take a section of the hair from the left side, twist, and wrap over your secured center twist. Secure with a pin.
5. Repeat step 4 on the right side. Secure again remembering to hide the pins in the twist so you can’t see them.
6. Next divide the remaining hair into three sections with the largest being the middle section. Gather that large center section of hair in the middle. We are about to wrap it.

7. Take the left section and twist it over the middle section as before, but this time instead of securing it with a pin, twist it back underneath the middle section. Do the same with the right section so that both ends meet back underneath the middle section to create a ponytail.
8. With each twist wrapped around the pony, you’ll need to secure it. Use a small hair tie to connect the ends of the twists. The ends will easily hide within the curls of the ponytail.

9. Style the front of your hair how you like, tendrils, swept bangs, anything.

10. Finish with hairspray.
